ABOUT THE NATIONAL YOUNGARTS FOUNDATION 

The National YoungArts Foundation (YoungArts) was established in 1981 by Lin and Ted Arison to identify and nurture the most accomplished young artists in the visual, literary, design and performing arts, and assist them at critical junctures in their educational and professional development. Through a wide range of annual programs, performances, and partnerships with some of the nation’s leading cultural institutions, YoungArts aspires to create a strong community of alumni and a platform for a lifetime of encouragement, opportunity and support.   

YoungArts’ signature program is an application-based award for emerging artists ages 15–18 or in grades 10–12 from across the United States. Selected through a blind adjudication process, YoungArts winners receive valuable support, including financial awards of up to $10,000, professional development and educational experiences working with renowned mentors—such as Debbie Allen, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Frank Gehry, Wynton Marsalis, José Parlá, Jeanine Tesori, Mickalene Thomas and Salman Rushdie—and performance and exhibition opportunities at some of the nation’s leading cultural institutions, including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington, D.C.), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), The Museum of Modern Art (New York) and New World Center (Miami). Additionally, YoungArts winners are eligible for nomination as U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students who exemplify academic and artistic excellence. 

YoungArts winners become part of a thousands-strong alumni network of artists, which offers them additional professional opportunities throughout their careers. General Summary of Duties:

Reporting to the Vice President of External Relations, the Director of Marketing will develop and implement a comprehensive marketing and digital communications strategy for all YoungArts programs, events and initiatives that builds brand awareness, advances the mission and promotes the value of the organization to all relevant constituents. The Director of Marketing must have a strong understanding of the key issues and objectives in each department and an acute awareness of the strategic direction of the organization. In this role, the Director of Marketing will manage the Digital Communications Officer and the Social Media and Video Manager.

Essential and Other Responsibilities: (perform other duties as assigned)

Strategic Planning

  • Work with the senior leadership team to translate institutional strategic goals into focused marketing objectives.
  • Develop and help execute marketing strategies for fundraising and Development events and programs
  • Assist in servicing all sponsors, affiliate and partner relationships.
  • Work with the VP of External Relations on presentations, reports and communication strategies.

Messaging, Positioning & Copywriting

  • Oversee editorial direction of all print and digital materials and projects.
  • Develop cross-channel messaging arcs with specific guidance on voice, tactics and timing.
  • Draft and/or copyedit content for deliverables including proposals, presentations, and creative briefs, as well as advertising, collateral, direct mail, website, press releases, newsletters and other media that clearly communicate YoungArts messaging and objectives.
  • Work with Senior PR Manager on local strategy and outreach, as well as the completion and dissemination of press materials.
  • Work with the Creative Director and Project Coordinator to ensure the timely creation of collateral
  • Oversee content creation, messaging and copyediting of the website.
  • Utilize and ensure that proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation is used in all marketing content and communication while employing YoungArts’ style/editorial guide and AP Style guidelines.

Marketing

  • Create holistic, goal-oriented marketing and communications strategies based on audience research, message development, core content, action opportunities and constituent data.
  • Lead the growth of the YoungArts digital community and raise awareness through website, e-communications and social media channels.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive program with an appropriate mix of paid advertising, sponsored content and editorial coverage to create innovative campaigns that inspire engagement opportunities and assist in fundraising efforts.
  • Lead the social, web and email strategies to support YoungArts’ mission, programs, alumni and the organization’s positioning in the arts and cultural narrative. 
  • Leverage digital channels to drive brand awareness, engagement, content sharing and consumption, retention and re-engagement.
  • Define social strategies, measure campaigns and programs and provide insights for informed decision-making.
  • Oversee Google AdWords Grant and work closely with consultants and agencies to maximize these platforms
  • Collaborate with Director of Education to develop recruitment materials and other communication strategies for educators, parents and applicants.

Qualifications and Experience Requirements:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Minimum 6 years’ experience at a non-profit organization and/or across a broad range of marketing disciplines
  • Solid marketing experience with extensive network of contacts in regional market
  • Experience working with social and content focused communities (Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Pinterest, YouTube, etc.), e-communications and website
  • Experience working with email marketing automation platforms, such as Mailchimp
  • Extensive knowledge of the marketing and digital communications methodologies for a nonprofit institution
  • Demonstrated success in developing and executing major marketing, promotional and/or public relations campaigns
  • Ability to leverage data and analytics to prioritize and assess impact
  • Excellent speaking and writing skills; Spanish is a plus
  • In-depth knowledge of AP Style
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Knowledge of arts and/or culture audiences in the widest possible context
  • High level analytical, problem solving and presentation skills
  • Ability to train, direct, supervise, manage and motivate staff
  • Flexibility in meeting shifting demands and priorities
  • High level of creativity and an entrepreneurial approach to problem solving
  • Knowledge of and experience in using standard Microsoft Office programs
  • Bachelor’s degree
